Metal Gear Solid 4 Meets iPod

Solid Snake sells out.

May 13, 2008 - Konami is turning the release of MetalGear Solid 4 into a huge event, with so many collaborative marketing schemes that you may think you're waiting for a movie release.

We've already shared with you confirmation of an Assassin's Creed
costume. As depicted in that mysterious Assassin's Solid April Fool's
Joke, the Altair costume from the Ubisoft title is officially set to
appear in MGS4. You'll have to do something "special" to access it, but
aside from that, we don't have the details.
Xbox 360 to get a smaller case revision in 2009?

MAY 13, 2008 - We think we've already got a handle on the various chipset revisions planned for Microsoft's too-beautiful-for-this-world Xbox 360*, but it looks like that planned 45nm "Valhalla" combined CPU / GPU motherboard design we've been hearing about might also come in a redesigned, smaller case. That's certainly news to us, but TG Daily has the refresh happening on the same fall-2009 timeline we've been hearing about, so at least all these sketchy rumors line up. We'll see when we see -- it sounds like the 65nm Jasper units are coming off the line for that August release in the meantime to keep us all warm at night.

Xbox 360 Supports DivX and XviD

December 8, 2007 - The Xbox 360 supports DivX and XviD as of today, which may make some of you with big file collections (like us) as giddy as a kid in store with puppies made of candy. We threw our entire collection of movies, TV shows and random clips at it and found that the 360 can play back pretty much anything. Here are some notes.

You can play files off of a CD/DVD. This feature wasn't listed on the Xbox Team's website as one of the supported locations for playing back content, but this is fantastic for homes that have wireless networks (or no network at all). In fact, reading off a disc is probably the best way to ensure your movie won't cut out in the middle due to network congestion (unlikely) or someone turning off the computer accidentally (fairly likely).

Xbox 360's QWERTY thumboard

April 9, 2007 - Here is the latest from Microsoft Xbox 360 division. If you haven’t already seen the new Xbox 360 keyboard/thumboard , here’s some light on the matter. The text input device is a QWERTY thumb keyboard add-on. The bulk of the TID is all at the base, so it shouldn't be a deal breaker for the small handed, but we'll have to get this in hand to know just how ergonomic it's going to be to type with. An anonymous tipster, who spotted this before it went official, had these encouraging words to say: "The thumboard beats the hell out of the one on my BlackJack, and once they let me play with it I didn't want to put it down." We wouldn't really say TID vs. BlackJack is the ultimate comparison, but it at least sounds like the tipster had a good time.
Sony's PlayStation 3 In Race Against Time

April 3, 2007 - After a slow start, the outlook
for Sony's PlayStation 3 is getting brighter as growing
appetite for high-definition TV fuels the game console's sales
and production costs come down.

But Sony's window of opportunity is closing quickly if it
hopes to catch up with rivals Microsoft Corp. and Nintendo Co.
Ltd. and keep the support of game developers so vital to a
console's success, analysts said.

Sony Corp. and other console makers typically lose money on
the hardware and generate profit from royalties on software. So
the key to making money is to establish a large installed base
of consoles and encourage developers to put out a lot of games.

Game Developer Salaries

How much do the folks who make your games make?

April 4, 2007 - The latest issue of Game Developer
magazine includes the results of its 2006 Salary Survey, which details
the average salaries of game industry professionals. Game Developer's
sister publication Gamasutra
has summarized the results of the survey. Overall, the people making
the games you play enjoyed an average salary of $73,316 in 2006 --
slightly down from $75,039 in 2005.

The lowest average compensation was given to Q/A personnel, who
received about $37,861 for bug testing games. This figure is actually a
decrease from the previous year. Next up are game designers, who were
paid about $61,538. Designers' salaries have raised an average of
$5,000 over the last three years.

The 2006 average for artists was $65,107, basically flat from 2005. The
average audio employee was paid $69,935. Production personnel in
America had an average salary of $77,131, and programmers were paid
$80,886.

If you want to make bank in the game industry, though, you should
consider a career on the business and legal side of things. These
professionals raked in an average $95,596 last year.
Action games said to sharpen your vision by 20%

January 10 2007, Even there's a study to prove (and disprove) just about everything, but sometimes a little panacea to help ease our anxieties and foster our addictions. (Cellphones not causing cancer is one that jumps to mind.) Today's comes from the University of Rochester, which, contrary to what your mom always told you would happen to your eyesight, showed that all those hours of Gears of War might just pay off: apparently tested subjects who play action games for a few hours daily experience a "substantial increase in the spatial resolution of their vision", making them about 20% better at identifying letters amidst visual clutter (a test similar to the one the DMV administers to see if you're fit to operate a vehicle).

Burrows Talks Transformers

Traveller's Tales producer answers questions in a quick Q&A.

February 10, 2007 - LEGO Star Wars fans should know the name "Traveller's Tales" pretty well. The Cheshire-based studio developed both titles in the popular videogame series and is also responsible for such projects as The Chronicles of Narnia, Crash Twinsanity, and most of the Saturn-based Sonic the Hedgehogs. The team's latest venture is Transformers: The Game, Activision's licensed homage to this summer's upcoming (and incredibly expensive) motion picture.

To get the 411 on how things are turning out, we sent a number of email questions to producer Andy Burrows a few weeks back. And while some of the details released today weren't yet known at the time, he still managed to shed some light on what we can expect in the finished product...

Sony Launches PlayStation 3

Fans line up for hours on end to secure a console.

November 19, 2006 - Earlier today, the PlayStation 3 launched in North America to much fanfare. Around the country, people lined up in numbers far exceeding the supply of the system. Sony held midnight-launch extravaganzas in New York and San Francisco where thousands of fans lined the streets on November 16 waiting to be among the first PS3 owners as it went on sale at midnight. Celebrity appearances by Grammy Award-winner Ludacris and Chapelle Show's Charlie Murphy entertained the New York crowds, while musical act Angels and Airwaves rocked throughout the night in San Francisco.

"With today's launch of PS3, we are officially ushering in a new era in
true next-generation entertainment for homes all across North America,"
said Kaz Hirai, president and CEO of SCEA. "The innovative PS3 system
features powerful technologies and capabilities that have never been
brought together in one system, including the Cell Broadband Engine, BD
drive, HDD and online connectivity as standard features of every
system. The results are breathtaking new interactive worlds to explore,
eye-popping multimedia functionality, and a fully integrated online
experience -- all in high- definition clarity. The value we are
providing consumers with PS3 is beyond compare."
